Coloured Diamonds
Written by HeBe

If you thought that diamonds, with all their brilliance and sparkle, were always crystal clear “ you'd be wrong. They come in many other colours “ the deeper the hue and intensity, the scarcer they are. This isn't just a fixed colour either. A yellow diamond can range from the lightest lemon to a deep canary yellow, although this is very rare. Blue diamonds are among the most sought after, their delicate shades and iridescence reminding you of the shimmering sea. What about a luscious pink diamond “ this is just about the most desirable gem there is and the ultimate symbol of love “ if you can afford it! Red is the absolute rarest diamond and even the most avid collectors have never seen one. The largest red diamond in the world is known as the Red Shield, and weighs just 5.11 carats, compared with over 600 carats for the largest diamond of any kind. Its size is unremarkable but it is famous for the fact that it is a beautiful red. In fact, jewellers dont often see the natural hues of purple, orange and green.

Coloured Diamonds
"...Gems are the flowers of the mineral kingdom and the fancy colored diamond is the orchid..."

Wouldnt it be fabulous if these lovely gems were more readily available? A whopping pink or green solitaire diamond would certainly make heads turn! Youll have to dream on though, the extreme rarity and exceptionally high value of coloured diamonds puts them out of range for most of us.

Coloured diamonds aren't always created the way nature intended. Diamonds can be treated in  special ways to give colours of naturally found diamonds. These treated gemstones are not considered as valuable and are not considered to be as good an investment as natural ones. Of course you can't tell the difference unless your an expert but if it sounds too good to be true it probably is. Its important to get a certificate from a reputable laboratory such as the GIA that clearly identifies the origin of the stone and the origin of its color. At HeBe we never sell treated diamonds and always insist on natural gemstones from Conflict Free Sources.
