Diamonds the rarest gem of all
Written by HeBe
We all know them as sparkling, brilliant, faceted and beautiful but diamonds aren't just desirable for their looks alone - this amazing gemstone is also a mathematical rarity. Do you know that a diamond looks exactly the same when viewed from any angle? It has perfect symmetry and even more amazing is that its components cannot ever be rearranged hence its reputation for endurance and durability. When you give a diamond it is a gesture filled with symbolism and meaning. It's a statement of long lasting feelings, promises to keep, a love that will never die.  The crystal structure of a diamond is a web of hexagonal rings – stretching into infinity.   There is only one other crystal structure that is similar, known to crystallographers as K4, but this has ten sides instead of eight.   Even the number of sides to the diamond crystal is significant, eight is considered to be a number that brings good fortune, luck and blessings throughout the world.

A diamond is forever?  Now maths has proved it’s true.
