Zuni Fetishes

When a Zuni Indian finds a stone that resembles an animal, he believes it is one of these ancient stone beasts capable of bringing good fortune, healing and protection to the owner.

The adornments on the backs of the fetishes in turquoise and coral represent arrow heads or feathers to enhance the fetishe's power. Shell or bead adornment is a show of appreciation by it's owner. A fetish has one paramount purpose; to assist against any real or potential problems. It can be owned by an individual, a family, a clan or whole tribe but it is always the responsibility of one person. Special care must be taken to see that the fetish is properly fed, admired and cared for. Cornmeal or crushed turquoise are favoured foods.
